Our Academy classes are designed for those who are interested in studying various styles of dance. Dancers in the conservatory are welcome to add any of these classes "a la carte" to their program. Dancers in Monarch Dance Company are required to take a combination of Conservatory and Academy classes, depending on their goals with competitive dance.
A one week trial is recommended for placement in this program.
"The best part is how supportive and encouraging all the teachers have been. It's been a real confidence booster. I have grown in ways I never expected." Larissa, adult student
Our ballet program is based in the Vaganova method, and builds the foundation for all other forms of dance technique. Students are taught a full ballet class beginning at the barre and finishing in the center. Foundational movements and terminology is taught to provide a strong base for which to build upon in the coming levels. A ballet hip alignment belt and a terminology workbook is required. A Routine is developed for the Academy School Performance.
In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to combine the strong but controlled legwork of ballet with modern that stresses on torso. It also employs contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristics of modern dance. Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are often used, as well. In the 1980s, the approach to contemporary dance became more intentional and academically focused, often described as “interdisciplinary” and “collaborative.” This period marked a shift from spontaneous and experimental methods to choreographies grounded in intellectual concepts, such as mathematical structures and repetitive patterns.
Level 1/2 studies continue to evolve & prepare the young jazz student for more complicated steps, footwork combinations, turns, and jumps. This is achieved through fun jazz-based exercises using songs and dance movement that is age and skill level appropriate. A Routine is developed for the Academy School Performance.
Leaps and Turns focuses on building strength for jump height and balance for elite level turn sequences. This class is essential for preparing a dancer for his/her dance team at the high school level, and will also propel a competitive dancer to new heights for their turns and jumps specifically.
Lyrical dance combines techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with current forms of popular dance. Classes include warm up, isolations, stretches, across the floor progressions, and choreography combinations. These classes are for dancers who like precision and rhythm, physical challenges, and personal style and expression particularly with lyrically expressive songs. Exercises focus on increasing flexibility and strength, rhythms and isolation of body parts, and expressing personal style. A Routine is developed for the Academy School Performance.
Tap focuses on rhythms and patterns in footwork through proper technique, as well as personal style and producing clear sounds. Classes include a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. These classes are for dancers who like rhythm, precision footwork, and creative styling. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. As students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate. A Routine is developed for the Academy School Performance.
Acro is a blend of classical dance technique with precision and acrobatic elements. This class is designed to promote strength, flexibility, and technique while safely mastering various levels of Acro elements. Ballet is a strong requirement for participation in this class.
Hip Hop dance refers to social or choreographed dance styles primarily danced to Hip Hop music or that have evolved as part of Hip Hop culture. This includes a wide range of styles notably breaking, locking, and popping. A Routine is developed for the Academy School Performance.
